The first settlers were T.S. Collins and J.B. Solby, who came early in November of 1871 and spent the winter hunting and trapping. A.W. Kelley was located here in May 1872 and brought his family from Fort Totten in July of that year. He was Jamestown’s first postmaster, chairman of the board of county commissioners that organized the county, and clerk of the district court. The original townsite of Jamestown was surveyed by Edward Kopper in 1874.
